Here's what you'll need: 3/4" thick piece of Oak or other heavy wood 5 1/2" X 7".
3/4" thick Cedar 5 1/4" X 8 1/2".
1 Cedar shingle.
1" dowel 12" long.
1/4" dowel 1" long.
#6 X 1 5/8" wood screws.
Dark stain.
Varnish.
Glue.

Cut the base out of 3/4" Oak 5 1/4" X 7".
Round all the top edges and corners with a 1/4" router bit and sand.
From the bottom drill four counter sunk holes. One 3" from the back and centered. Three 1" back from the front edge evenly spaced.
Make the birdhouse out of 3/4" Cedar. Cut it 5 1/4" X 8 1/2".
Cut a peak at 90 degrees. We made ours a little off center to add some character.
Drill a 1" hole 2 1/2" up from the bottom half way though.
Drill a 1/4" hole 1 3/8" up from the bottom halfway through.
Cut 2 1" wide pieces from the end of a Cedar shake.
Cut the shake pieces long enough to overhang the edge of the roof. Leave the thinnest part to the center.
All that' left is assembly and finish.
Varnish the Oak base.
Glue and screw the 1" dowel to the base.
Glue and screw the birdhouse to the base.
Glue the 1/4" dowel in the front of the birdhouse.
Paint the center of the hole black and stain the roof.

That's how we did ours. Be creative and make yours any way you like. That's the fun of these projects, they leave a lot to the imagination.
